Procrastination and Stickynotes

I am actually on a post it ban right now.

I had to make a solemn vow NOT to purchase any more of those wonderful sticky note thingies.

I am a bit obsessed.  Not anything fancy. Just the newest coloured set.

Yes, I keep post its in my handbag…don’t judge!

They just sit so neatly on a page and I can use them to write just one thing, or many things onto them.

Some may consider this a waste.

I choose to call it part of the creative process.  Well that was my way of phrasing it.

I have to agree that my obsession with buying different post its was actually a way of me procrastinating.  Yep, that little thing that you do when you pretend to be deep into the creative process, but actually you are using it as a distraction because you don’t want to take the next step.

How many other people do that?

Plan. Plan. Plan. End up with a boat load of post its, sheets and workbooks. But don’t actually do anything with it?

A number of post its with random ideas. Great for cultivating creativity but where do they go?

That’s why I’ve committed to the following:

  1.  Realise how much I’ve wasted money on these things.
  2. Make a vow is not to purchase anymore until I’m down to my last set of 60. AKA. Knuckle down and get stuff done.
  3. Just do something.

The post it’s now represent something else.  My connection to me.  No longer pushing my creativity aside.  But harnessing my passions so that I can create a life and living that I love ( Marie Forleo quote there), by incorporating the things that I love.

On Passion is defined as

  1. any powerful or compelling emotion or feeling, as love or hate.
  2. strong amorous feeling or desire; love; ardor.

That’s what I want to bring to my day. That’s how I want to feel every time I do something.  That’s how I want to create.

An example of my excess planning

So in order to channel that passion correctly I’m going to have to take it easy on the post its. Take the time to go inwards.  Take the time to really think about how I want my passion to show up in the world.  As myself some serious questions.

  1. What do I enjoy doing?
  2. When do I feel most alive?
  3. What are you interested in?
  4. What am I most proud of?
  5. What do I want to be known for?
  6. What would my ideal day look like?
  7. Why do I want to do what I want to do?

As you can see I’ve got a lot of homework to do over the next few weeks -while on my post it ban. Every time I use one of those things I’ll be asking myself am I doing it for progress or procrastination. That alone will make a huge difference in the approach I’m taking to create the life that I want.

So now over to you.

Is there something you procrastinate with when you should be progressing on something?

It’s ok if there is. Just bringing awareness to it, is often all that is needed to make a subtle change. I’d love to hear what it is. Just pop it below in the comments.

So long post its
